Backstory
Presumably, there was a Henry Gale who found his way to the island by way of hot-air balloon. However, this ''real'' Henry Gale was a black man from Wayzata, Minn. As for the scrawny white man who claims to be Henry Gale? So far, we know nothing — except that he's with the Others.
Island Life So Far
''The Artist Formerly Known as Henry Gale,'' as Sawyer dubbed him, was found tangled up in one of jungle-dwelling Rousseau's net traps. Certain that the bug-eyed stranger in her midst was an Other, Rousseau notified Sayid, who told Locke. Together they interrogated him in the hatch, and despite Sayid's torture tactics, the captive stuck to his story: He and his wife had set off in a hot-air balloon on an around-the-world journey only to crash on the island, where his wife eventually fell victim to a sickness that sounds like the one Rousseau says killed her companions as well. But ''Henry Gale'' was exposed when Sayid, Ana Lucia, and Charlie went hunting for the dead wife's grave and came back with the real Gale's Minnesota driver's license. Busted, the Other clammed up, save for the occasional cryptic comment; he claimed that the hatch was ''a joke'' and made reference to a mysterious ''Him,'' believed to be the fearsome leader of the Others. Fake Gale was ultimately freed by Michael, who got his Others-snatched son Walt back in return. During the exchange, the manipulative Machiavelli seemed to suggest that his plan had always been to set up Jack, Kate, and Sawyer for abduction. When Michael asked the big question — ''Who are you people?'' — Gale smirked and replied, ''We're the good guys, Michael.''
Burning Question for Season 3
''We know he's not Henry Gale. What's his real name? And more importantly,'' teases Lindelof, ''why has he selected Kate, Jack, and Sawyer to hold captive?''
We Predict
The Others believe that they will help to save mankind by breeding a better kind of human being, and Jack, Kate, and Sawyer fit their genetic bill. (Apparently ''better'' also means ''prettier.'')
