Backstory
This twenty-something Aussie fast-food worker was distraught after her boyfriend walked out on her three months into an unplanned pregnancy. A psychic named Richard Malkin (Nick Jameson) then desperately tried to persuade her not to give up her baby, claiming it ''needs your protection.'' Later, though, when Claire finally decided to keep the child, the psychic changed his mind and said she should let a couple in L.A. adopt the infant instead. But he was adamant that she board Oceanic 815, leaving Sydney the next day.

Island Life So Far
After the plane crashed, soon-to-be ex-junkie Charlie befriended and later comforted Claire when she woke up in the middle of the night screaming that someone was trying to hurt her unborn baby. Her dreams proved prophetic when Ethan (William Mapother), an Other who had infiltrated the Losties' camp, kidnapped both Claire and Charlie. Ultimately, she broke free of the medical facility where the Others were holding her — but had no memory of what happened during her abduction. Claire later returned to where she was held captive and remembered that Ethan had injected her with ''medicine'' for the baby in utero, and convinced her that she should leave the baby with him. A teenage girl, who might just be cryptic Frenchwoman Rousseau's daughter, told Claire that Ethan planned to kill her and hurriedly helped her escape.

Kate delivered Claire's son, Aaron, who was later baptized by Mr. Eko. Claire and Charlie's budding relationship disintegrated when she learned that he was hiding drugs. A distraught Charlie then briefly abducted Aaron after a series of ominous dreams — but the ill-fated couple eventually grew close again, and shared a kiss in the season 2 finale.

''Are there any men for her on the island other than Charlie?'' asks Lindelof.

We Predict
Sparks continue to fly between Claire and Charlie. But we wouldn't be surprised if one of the Others — or maybe hunky new cast member Rodrigo Santoro — starts to fall for Claire too.
