Desmond David Hume

Unknown |
Profession: |
Formerly a Lance Corporal in the Royal Scots Regiment, dishonorably discharged; former set designer for the Royal Shakespeare Company |
Actor Name: |
Henry Ian Cusick |
Backstory
Roughly four years ago, this stubbled Scot was dishonorably discharged from a British military prison and learned that his true love, Penelope Widmore (Sonya Walger), was engaged to another man thanks to the machinations of her moneybags father, Charles (Alan Dale). Desperate to reclaim his honor, Desmond decided to compete in a Widmore-sponsored sailboat race. Alas, he got caught in a storm and washed up on you-know-where.
Island Life So Far
The castaway was found by Kelvin (Clancy Brown), a participant in a highly dubious scientific endeavor known as the Dharma Initiative. Desmond was brought to a subterranean hatch originally designed to study the island's electromagnetic energy but now charged with ''savin' the world,'' according to Kelvin. That meant inputting a series of numbers into a microcomputer and pushing a button every 108 minutes. For three years, Desmond believed he was stranded before learning Kelvin was clandestinely repairing his boat. The two fought; he left Kelvin for dead. (Instead of escaping, Desmond felt obligated to keep pushing the button after the hatch went berserk during their clash; he later realized that Oceanic 815 crashed the same day.) After meeting castaways John Locke, Kate, and Jack, Desmond passed the button buck and set sail, but found that all courses led right back to the island. Desmond and Locke later conspired to defy button-pushing protocol only to discover that not inputting the code turned the hatch into a destructive super-magnet. In the season 2 finale, Desmond heroically turned a fail-safe key that blew up the hatch in an electromagnetic burst. It let off a blinding white light and was detected by far-flung scientists who seemed to be working for...Penelope.
Burning Question for Season 3
"He's spent time in prison, but why?'' teases Lindelof. Says Cuse, ''What happened to Desmond as a result of getting blown up in the hatch?''
We Predict
As comic books tell us, when you get bombarded by strange energies, you get strange superpowers. So either Desmond will become an omnisciently enlightened demigod... or the Hulk. Look out, smoke monster — Desmond smash!
